With public service announcements, a speaker series, and panel discussions, the initiative is aiming to bring awareness to the pay gap and promote parity at work. Telemundo is also partnering with the University of Miami School of Business to present an executive leadership training program. Monica Gil of Telemundo speaks to Know Your Value founder Mika Brzezinski about what it will take to close the wage gap for Latinas. It comes as no surprise to most that there’s a sustained pay gap between men and women in the American work force, but today we look beyond the gap between just men and women and instead recognize how race and ethnicity impacts this divide.
Unlike women in the rest of the American West, suffragists in New Mexico focused on a national amendment, rather than a state law. Although they had fought for full suffrage to be included in the constitution when New Mexico became a state in 1912, they had been unsuccessful. Also, in order to protect the Spanish language provisions and religious freedoms for Catholics written into the document, the members of the constitutional convention had deliberately made the constitution extremely hard to amend.

Although it had seemed like certain victory, there was a last-minute difficulty with wavering legislators. Otero-Warren fiercely lobbied, using her new position as chair of the GOP state women’s committee to caucus with legislators and discipline their votes. The NWP organizers who came to New Mexico recognized the importance of working with Spanish-speaking women, whose communities held a great deal of political power. They listened to leaders like Aurora Lucero, daughter of the first secretary of state and a well-known author and advocate of bilingualism, and educator Nina Otero-Warren, who told them that the suffrage campaign also needed to address Spanish-speaking women. They insisted that the campaign include bilingual publications and speeches, often helping with the translations.
Access to health care and culturally sensitive programs have shown to make a significant difference. Long viewed primarily as a men’s disease, heart disease strikes women in great numbers. For Hispanic women, it is the second leading cause of death, just behind cancer.
As Hispanic Americans become a larger proportion of the population, their well-being affects the overall distribution of economic outcomes. Ensuring this population has access to good jobs and the social safety net is critical to addressing economic inequality. Researchers said these data can inform clinical practice and care for pregnant women during the coronavirus pandemic, and be used to better understand the prevalence of the virus in the community, and how socio-economic factors and inequities may affect its spread. Although feminists regularly cite the gender wage gap as a scourge holding back women in the workplace, in fact for Latinas, the gap is much worse. According to some estimates, Latinas earnjust 55 centsfor every dollar earned by non-Hispanic white men.
And while Latina women face significant health challenges, there have been a number of notable improvements. In the United States, female employment has become an increasingly important determinant of family economic well-being, especially among disadvantaged populations such as Latinas. Female employment offers these women more autonomy, the chance to support themselves without relying on a spouse. The Affordable Care Act does not cover non-citizens nor does it cover immigrants with less than 5 years of residency. As a result, Latino immigrants struggle to gain health care once they enter the United States.
Because Hispanic women still face limited benefits in terms of the wage gap for getting a college education after graduating from high school, just encouraging higher education will not resolve the gender wage gap. Mora and Dávila also find significant differences based on the generation of immigration. The wage gap between second-generation Hispanic workers and second-generation white workers is narrower than the gap between first-generation Hispanic and white workers.5 But beyond this drop from the first to the second generation, the gap doesn’t narrow further for later generations.
That gap is greater than for black women, who earn 39% less than white men, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, and greater than for Native American women, who earn 42% less than white men. Latina women earn 46% less than white men and 31% less than white women, the worst gender wage gap for any group of minority women, according to 2019 data.

Vanessa Casillas immigrated into the United States at the age of One from El Salvador with a single mother seeking asylum with no support, as her Father was killed in the Salvadorian civil war 2 months prior. Vanessa as a Latina immigrant who grew up in poverty in the streets of South- Central LA, knew first-hand what it was to struggle. Being raised by a single mother with 6 brothers and sisters, with minimal relative support lived their lives jumping from house to house, due to financial hardship as her mother possessed limited educational skills and struggled to find employment or childcare.
Assuming, consistent with the existing literature, that the election rather than subsequent events marked the onset of stress among Latina women, these peaks would correspond to infants conceived or in their second trimester of gestation around the time of the election. Our analyses included live male and live female singleton births from January 1, 2009, through July 30, 2017; nearly one-quarter of these births (23.5%) were to Latina women. Preterm infants represented 11.0% of male and 9.6% of female births to Latina women and 10.2% and 9.3% of those to other women.
In 2011, 788,000 Latinas ran their own businesses, representing a 46% increase from 2006. Comparatively, female business owners as a whole only increased by 20% during this same time period. These wage gaps in the workforce affect Latinas at every socioeconomic status, not just the working class.

Hispanic women are nearly three times more likely than non-Hispanic white women to lack health insurance, and less likely to have an established primary care physician.
